Can Sponsor Power to
Choose for High
Schools in Your Area!
Role
models for today’s youth too often fail to be
examples of the values, conduct and character
that inspire realistic career goals and
citizenship. Not everyone can be a movie star or
sports hero. But there are great American role
models whose lives can inspire and motivate
today’s youth through the special medium of
stage performances.
As
part of Center for America’s 10 By 20 Pledge
Campaign to expand skills training opportunities
through grassroots leadership across the
country, CFA is offering several programs to
reach out to at-risk youth to educate, motivate
and empower them to take advantage of training
opportunities they have.
One
such program to reach out to youth in at-risk
environments is Power to Choose. Through this
program, CFA and Darryl Van Leer partner with a
local corporate or foundation underwriting
sponsor to offer day-long programs to local high
schools.
Darryl is a writer, director and actor who has
spent 20 years developing and refining stage
performances in which he uses the ideas, stories
and accomplishment of great African Americans to
inspire and motivate young people.
He has given
more than 300 such performances of his one-man
shows at high schools and colleges across the
country.

CFA
and Darryl have collaborated to create a unique
one-hour stage performance in which Darryl
portrays Martin Luther King, Jr., George
Washington Carver and Ray Charles, and brings to
life Dr. Charles Drew and Garrett Morgan. In
this riveting theatrical performance, these
historical figures come alive and share their
passions, ideas and inspiration to give the
audience a transformational view of themselves
and their options.
The
60-minute performance is followed by
in-classroom and after-school sessions in which
Darryl stimulates real-world dialogs with
students about the inspiration they can draw
from these real-life heroes for their own lives.
Based
on the reactions from both students and the
media to Darryl’s programs, students will
respond on an emotional level to connect with
their latent aspirations and passions in a vivid
way. They will experience the inspiration
typically felt by people who actually met and
talked with these great Americans – and felt
their lives opening up as a result.
Companies and foundations already working with
high schools in their headquarters or facility
locations will find this program to be
complementary to their ongoing school or
community partnerships. Those wanting to “make a
difference” will find this to be an attractive
and uniquely powerful way to contribute to high
schools or community centers which are searching
for help.
